As we draw closer to 2022, it seems that many of the things we once thought were sure bets no longer hold true. For example, although Blackberry was once the go-to choice for smartphones, it doesn’t seem that way anymore. In fact, one of the most commonly asked questions around WhatsApp is whether or not it works on Blackberry devices.
The answer, unfortunately, is that it often doesn’t. In fact, there are a number of reports online from users who have found that WhatsApp is either not working at all on their Blackberry device, or that it’s working very slowly and/or inconsistently. This can be frustrating for Blackberry users who are used to having a reliable messaging app at their fingertips.
What’s worse, is that it seems like WhatsApp might not ever get around to fixing the problem. When reporting on the status of Blackberry devices for 2019, developers at Whatsapp noted how they had removed support for some versions of Windows Phone and JavaME due to “technical reasons” (likely because both platforms were already obsolete by this point). So while chat functions may still be available through these apps for users who need them, it does seem likely that WhatsApp will eventually remove them – just like they did with BlackBerry.
FINAL ANSWER
Bottom line: If you’re looking for an app that will work all of the time on your Blackberry device, sadly WhatsApp isn’t the one…unless you happen to own a newer model, in which case it may work just fine.
In the meantime, there are plenty of other messaging apps to choose from that will work just as well on your device. Try out some of the popular options like Facebook Messenger, Telegram, or Signal and see which one you like best. And who knows – maybe by 2022 WhatsApp will have finally made its way over to Blackberry!
