Will A PS5 Controller Also Work On PS4?

The majority of owners of the PlayStation 5 will also own a PlayStation 4. And wouldn’t it be great to have an extra controller for your old video game system? After all, your PS5 purchase comes with its own DualSense controller.

It’s a bummer that the standard PS5 DualSense controller won’t work with your PlayStation 4. When you attempt to connect it, there are several errors and messages telling us why – even when using wires!

The two video game console generations are at odds with each other, no surprise. The PlayStation controllers are rather diverse from one another. It’s easy to see why the controllers aren’t readily interchangeable based on the main features:

Why Won’t PS5 Controllers Work On PS4??

There are a variety of reasons, but let’s focus on the biggest reason: Bluetooth.

It doesn’t matter if your PS5 controller uses USB cables or Bluetooth to connect to the console. It doesn’t matter if you’re playing wirelessly via WiFi connection or wired through the DualShock 4 USB cable. Your PlayStation 5 DualShock controllers can not communicate with your PlayStation 4 console at all, period!

Technically speaking, no one would expect that they do work together because there is no reason for them to do so. The PlayStation 4 isn’t compatible with either the wireless or wired connectivity of the DualShock 5 controllers anyway. You can’t blame anyone who wants them to be nice together, but it just won’t work.

There is no secret trick to make the PS5 controller work with a PlayStation 4, but there are some reasons that may clarify why not:

The PS4 console does not recognize the DualShock 5 as a compatible device for communication, thus it won’t receive any signals from a PS5 controller. It’s worth mentioning that there isn’t a wireless adapter for PlayStation 4 controllers either. If you had one, your DualShock controllers would still be incompatible anyway. Even if your PS5 controller worked through Bluetooth on your PlayStation 4, it also needs to be recognized as an input method by the game itself.

Connect PlayStation 5 controller and a PlayStation Controller with Remote Play

We have a solution! This means that you can use the DualShock 4 controller from your PlayStation 4 with your PS5. All it takes is a little extra accessory to help you do so.

You’ll need two things:

An Android device . The best way to connect your DualShock 4 controller with your PS 5 is via remote play. This requires an Android device since Sony doesn’t allow iOS devices from being able to connect wirelessly via Bluetooth. A USB OTG Cable

What’s a USB OTG Cable?

It’s a small accessory that costs around $2-$3 dollars and allows us to plug various accessories into our smartphone or tablet devices. In this case, we’re going to plug our Dualshock 4 controller into the micro-USB end of the cable.

Once you have both of these items, follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Connect your PlayStation 4 controller to your Android device using the USB OTG Cable

Step 2: On your PS5, turn on Remote Play. This can be found in the Settings menu

Step 3: Select your Android device as the remote play connection method

Step 4: You’re all set! Enjoy playing your favorite PlayStation 4 games on your PlayStation 5.

The process is a little more complicated than just connecting wirelessly as we would with our DualSense controller, but it’s worth it for those who want to continue using their favorite PlayStation 4 controllers.
